POPLAR BLUFF NATIVE NAMED 2008 ENGINEER OF THE YEAR
LITTLE ROCK, Ark., March 6 – Poplar Bluff native Nathaniel Keen has
been named Engineer of the Year by the Army Corps of Engineers’ Little
Rock District. Keen, who graduated in 1995 from Poplar Bluff High
School, works for the district and was instrumental in some recent high
profile civil works projects.
The Corps’ Little Rock District covers more than half of Arkansas and
the southern portion of Missouri, including the Poplar Bluff area.
Henry Himstedt, chief of Little Rock District’s Hydrology and
Technical Services Branch, praised Keen’s work before presenting him with
the award.
“Nathaniel always presents a positive, professional image and
continuously demonstrates a high degree of individual initiative and
leadership in every facet of his job,” Himstedt said.
Keen reflected on his work that earned him the Engineer of the Year
title.
“I try to quantify my work in terms of lives saved from floods or
dangerous navigation conditions rather than in hours at a desk, dollars
earned or years to retirement,” he said. “The Corps’ work is
important, and it is our work.”
Keen has worked for the Corps for seven years. He, his wife, Audra,
and their four children now live in Sherwood, Ark. His parents, Charles
and Bertha Keen, live in Poplar Bluff. He is a registered
professional engineer and holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil
engineering from the University of Missouri at Rolla.
Wappapello, Missouri - July 16, 2008: The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake has developed
partnerships with several local businesses, gas stations, and grocery stores in Poplar Bluff, Dexter, Puxico, and
Wappapello, Missouri, to help promote public safety. These partners have allowed safety messages to be placed
on their gasoline pumps or in their windows during the 2008 Recreation Season. The message is simple:
“Make the Right Choice. Stay in the Safety Zone and Buckle Up!”
Mr. John D. Ross, owner of the Poplar Bluff Sears Retail Store, has recently joined this safety campaign by
putting up a safety display in the store. Similar safety boards are in the sporting goods sections of eight
southeast Missouri WalMart Stores as well as Corning, Arkansas. In addition, Mr. Carl Grobe from the
Bootheel Sign Company has been running a digital safety message on the 25-foot billboard on Highway 67 near
WalMart since Memorial Day.
Remember, making the right choice can mean the difference between life and death for our loved ones. If
you are interested in partnering with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers to promote safety on our waterways
and highways, please feel free to contact Natural Resources Specialist Andrew Jefferson at the Wappapello
Lake Project Office by calling (573) 222-8562.

WAPPAPELLO, MISSOURI – April 24, 2008: The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello Lake recently
sent Natural Resources Specialist Andrew Jefferson and Park Ranger Kathy Dickson to serve on a panel at the
12th Annual International Boating and Water Safety Summit in San Diego, California. They also represented
the St. Louis District Safety Team along with Natural Resources Specialist Rachel Garren from the St. Louis
District Office and Park Ranger Pam Doty from Lake Shelbyville.
From a pool of 80 media award entries, Wappapello Lake brought home First and Second Place awards for
radio public service announcements. Ranger Jefferson recorded the announcements at River Radio in Poplar
Bluff, Missouri. In addition, Rangers Jefferson and Dickson each received a National Water Safety Coin and
accepted a Letter of Commendation from the National Water Safety Congress on behalf of Mr. Dan Gross,
President of the SEMO Regional Water Safety Council.
The International Water Safety Summit is a joint effort between the National Water Safety Congress and the
National Safe Boating Council. Over 350 professionals from the United States and foreign countries attended.
The Summit is an excellent opportunity to network informally, visit with peers, and acquire new ideas to take
back and use in your community. For more information on water safety, call the Wappapello Lake Project
Office at (573) 222-8562.
